This season, I’m booking beach sessions in Belmar, New Jersey, for a select number of evenings.

After weeks of heading to the beach, playing Skee-Ball, grabbing ice cream, or watching your little one dip their toes in the ocean for the very first time, wouldn’t it be sweet to remember this season with a photo session?

Summertime is made for making memories, so why not document them?

I know planning can be hard, especially when you’re trying to squeeze everything into those last few weeks of summer, but let me give you permission to book the session. Whether you’re celebrating an engagement, documenting your maternity season, marking a milestone, or simply want to remember another year with your family, I hope you find plenty of inspiration in this blog.

Tips for the Perfect Beach Session

Arrive Early

While the beach crowds often begin winding down by the time we step onto the sand for photos, summer still means busy streets and plenty of competition for parking spots. Arriving early gives you time to park, get settled, and take a breath before your session begins.

Things to Bring

Depending on the vision for your session, you may want to bring:

A blanket for cuddly photos
Water
Sunscreen
Bug spray
Shoes that are easy to slip on and off
A hairbrush and a few extra hair accessories
Lip color for touch-ups after lots of smooches, especially for engagement sessions
Plenty of good energy

The beach can be windy, so preparing your hair well or having a backup plan that still makes you feel confident is always helpful.

Finding Outfit Inspiration

In addition to this blog, you can browse Instagram or Pinterest for outfit inspiration. Look for colors, textures, and combinations that feel like you while still working well with the natural colors of the sand, water, and sky.

Prepare the Kids for the Beach

Picking the perfect outfits is only part of preparing for your session. It is also helpful to make sure your children are comfortable at the beach before photo day.

I am all for documenting real memories, but the most successful sessions usually happen after the kids have already visited the beach at least once that season. Searching for shells and jumping over waves tends to be much more exciting once they are past the initial “What the heck is this stuff?” phase that can happen during their first experience with the sand.

Pack a Bag for the Car

Leave a towel and a change of clothes in the car for the drive home. This is especially helpful if we end the session near the water or the kids get a little more adventurous than planned.
